Smoke or campfire smell
Creosote is the tar-like residue that every wood fire leaves in the flue. In humid summer weather it gives off a stale smoke smell, and in tight modern houses, kitchen and bathroom fans can pull air down the chimney and into the room. A sweep removes most of the creosote, and closing the damper and glass doors when the fireplace isn't in use stops the down-draft. Our sweep is $249 to $549 plus HST depending on the build-up, priced before we start.
Musty or damp smell
A musty smell means water is getting in: through an open flue, a cracked crown or failing flashing. It can also come from leaves, a bird or squirrel nest, or a dead animal on the smoke shelf. A cap, a crown repair or a clean-out fixes it, depending on what the inspection finds.
Gas smell
If a gas fireplace or a nearby appliance smells like rotten eggs, don't touch light switches. Get everyone out, then call Enbridge Gas or 911 from outside. Book a repair only after the gas company has made it safe.
