What you are paying for
A WETT inspection is a visual check of a wood-burning system by someone trained under the Wood Energy Technology Transfer program. The inspector looks at the appliance (fireplace, wood stove or insert), the stove pipe or chimney, the clearances to anything that can burn, the hearth and floor protection, and the flue, then writes up what meets the installation code and what does not.
The report is what insurers and buyers actually want. It should name the appliance, describe the venting, and list anything that fails with a clear fix.
Why quotes vary so much
Published 2026 guides for the GTA put a basic inspection around $150 to $300, camera inspections around $250 to $400, and full written assessments for a home sale higher still. Our own price is $65 plus HST because we combine the inspection with our chimney work and quote any repair on the same visit.
- A camera scan of the full flue costs more than a visual check.
- A sweep may be needed first if heavy creosote hides the liner — ours is $249 to $549 plus HST depending on the build-up, priced before we start.
- Rural travel, steep roofs and hard-to-reach stoves add time.
What happens if something fails
Common fails are a stove too close to a wall, missing floor protection in front of the door, a stove pipe with the wrong clearances, or a damaged liner. The report lists the fix. We can price the repair the same day, and once it is fixed the system can be re-checked so your insurer gets a passing report.
