Who handles gas in Ontario
The Technical Standards and Safety Authority (TSSA) regulates gas appliances in Ontario, and only registered gas technicians can install or repair them. If your insurer asks about a gas fireplace, they usually want to know it was installed by a licensed contractor and is serviced, not a WETT report.
When the chimney still matters
A gas insert installed into an old masonry fireplace still vents through that chimney, usually through a liner. The masonry around it — crown, flashing, cap and bricks — still freezes and thaws every winter. That part is chimney work, and it is worth having the top of the chimney checked even if the fireplace below burns gas.
Converted fireplaces
If a wood fireplace was converted to gas logs or a gas insert, tell your insurer it is now gas. A leftover wood stove or a second wood fireplace in the same house still needs its own WETT inspection.
